Mississauga expert hosts presentation on household clutter and the risks to seniors’ health and safety

Home Instead Senior Care welcomed seniors and family caregivers to a presentation on Household Clutter recently. Guests came out to the Mississauga Central Library for the event, which included a presentation by Home Instead Senior Care as well as Motion Specialties. Guests enjoyed refreshments while learning about clutter and how to manage it – clutter can even be a safety hazard if not managed properly! The event was also the launch of Home Instead Senior Care’s public awareness campaign to educate families about clutter and household hazards.

Changes that Can Benefit Seniors
When seniors live alone, there are many safety risks. By making some minor changes in and around the home, seniors can be a little safer. These changes will also make it easier for the senior to function. Below is a list of possible changes that can make a huge difference in the daily life of a senior.
1. Lighting is very important. Seniors should have plenty of light in their home. The lights should be positioned so that they are effective and accessible. This can help reduce the chances of falls and other possible accidents in the home.
2. Adding electrical outlets will prevent too many things running on one outlet, reducing the risk of fire.
3. When replacing any door, make sure it fits properly and that there is a smooth transition. This will reduce the chances of tripping and falls.
4. Stairs should always have a handrail that allow for the senior to get a solid grip on the rail.
5. When updating flooring, slip-resistant materials should be used in the homes of seniors. If carpeting is being installed, make sure that it is a tight pile carpet.
6. Shelving can be a great help to seniors. They add storage and make things easily accessible.
7. Grab bars should be installed in bathrooms and a hand-held shower may be beneficial. The door locks on any interior door should have an emergency release.

With the New Year here, there’s no better time for seniors to start making improvements to their homes that can make them more comfortable and safe while living independently. Not all seniors can afford to make changes that will keep them at home, which is why many lower income Canadian seniors are eligible to receive assistance from the Home Adaptations for Seniors’ Independence Program.
In order to qualify for the program, seniors must:
• Be 65 years or older
• Have more limited mobility as a result of aging
• Meet the income criteria
• Live at a permanent residence independently (though home can be shared with other family members)
• Changes must be permanent to the home and improve seniors abilities to navigate around their home and generally increase safety. Common approved changes include hand rails, grab bars, levers on doors, and movement of storage spaces so they’re more accessible
